On July of 2012, the use of information and communication technologies by older adults is one of the main themes covered by the program Click, on the radio station Antena 1. The researcher Ana Veloso reminds us of the main challenges and difficulties when designing products or services taking older adults' needs into account.

On the radio program 'Click', the SEDUCE project is in focus. This project is coordinated by Ana Veloso, researcher and lecturer at the University of Aveiro, and funded by FCT.

Developing multimedia applications that facilitate the use of Information and communication technologies (ICT) for older adults is the main aim of the conducted research.

The research team is studying the main difficulties encountered by older adults in the use of ICT as well as their familiarity with certain metaphors, new interaction paradigms and their influence on mood, self-concept and the community's wellbeing. For this, the project involved four institutions of Aveiro in the recruitment, design process and also in an interactive evaluation of the online social community. Three selection criteria were taken into account: (a) Knowing how to read and how to write; (b) having a positive score on the congnitive evaluation exam (MMSE) and; (c) their motivation for the use of ICT.

In the end of the program, Ana Veloso argues that older adults' use of ICT has a number of advantages such as (a) the preesentation of an additional communication channel with family and friends and; (b) life-long learning. The research reveals that health information, news and communication services are some of the strongest reasons that lead these participants to access to the Internet. Therefore, these services are also offered by the online social community.

The radio program “Click” is an initiative of the University of Aveiro in partnership with Antena 1, which is broadcast every Saturday at 14h00. This podcast is available here.
