On September 12, 10h00, Cláudia Ortet defended her Master’s thesis in Multimedia Communication, entitled “Gamification and Senior Cyclotourism: Designing an app for the miOne online community. In room 21.2.20, the gamification techniques and elements that can motivate senior citizens to cyclotourism were presented.
The aim of this research is to understand the way gamification interventions can motivate senior citizens to adhere to cyclo-tourism and, therefore, this dissertation reports on the results obtained from the literature review and related work, as the involvement of three different senior citizens groups (7 focus group participants and 8 eye-tracking participants from two Universities of Third Age, and 31 cyclists’ interviewees), using a Development Research method. By receiving the insights from literature, cyclists and senior citizens, the researcher and focus group participants were able to co-design a cyclo-tourism app called Jizo.
Findings indicate that certain gamification techniques and elements can trigger senior citizens’ motivations towards cyclo-tourism, as also being essential integrative parts of an app of this context. The elements highlighted were social relationships, progression, challenges, competition, feedback and rewards, whereas they have an important role in pre-, in loco and post- experience. These data support the view on gamification capability to motivate senior cyclotourism.
